What Anilao does better
- Critter density. Secret Bay, Basura, and Mainit Muck rank among the best macro sites in Southeast Asia. Hairy frogfish, wonderpus, and blue-ringed octopus are reliable finds.
- Underwater photography culture. The Anilao Underwater Shootout, held most Aprils, draws the country's top shooters. Most resorts have camera rooms, rinse tanks, and snoot-friendly briefings.
- Calm, predictable conditions. Few currents, easy entries. Safer stage for newer Open Water divers.
- Marine sanctuary coverage. A large share of Anilao dive sites sit inside enforced MPAs — healthier reefs, bigger fish populations.
What Puerto Galera does better
- Variety across a single day. You can dive a wall, a wreck, and a drift in one three-dive morning.
- The Verde Island Passage. An hour off Sabang, Verde sits in arguably the densest marine biodiversity on Earth. Strong currents, mushroom-rock topography, schooling fish.
- Wreck diving. The Alma Jane, an 1897 inter-island freighter scuttled in 2003, is one of the most beginner-friendly wreck dives in the Philippines.
- Post-dive scene. Sabang has a walking-distance strip of bars, restaurants, and cheap food. Anilao does not — most resorts sit in isolated coves.
- Budget accommodation. Basic dive-shop rooms run ₱1,200–₱2,000 / night in Sabang; Anilao's floor is closer to ₱2,500.
Where Anilao is weaker
- Limited structure dives. No significant wrecks. No dramatic drift sites. If you don't shoot macro, three days can feel repetitive.
- No walking nightlife. Resorts are spread along a narrow coastal road — you don't walk between them.
- Fewer cheap bed options. The budget floor is higher than Sabang's.
Where Puerto Galera is weaker
- Currents can be intimidating. The sites that made PG famous — Verde Island, Washing Machine, Canyons — all require current experience.
- Boat traffic and general tourism. Sabang is a full tourism town, not a dive village. Expect crowds on long weekends.
